Responsible Gambling
and Harm Minimisation

We are committed to providing a safe, enjoyable environment for our patrons. Help is always available for anyone affected by problem gambling.

Our Commitment

At We Care Community Trust Limited, we comply fully with the Gambling Act 2003 and the Gambling (Harm Prevention and Minimisation) Amendment Regulations 2023. Our approach is built on a culture of care, ensuring that our venue managers and staff are trained, resourced, and proactive in identifying and supporting players.

While most players enjoy gaming machines as a form of entertainment, we recognise that for some, gambling can cause harm, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Identifying Signs of Harm

Our staff are trained to monitor the gaming room through regular sweeps to observe player behaviour. They are trained to identify signs that a player's gambling may be causing harm, including:

  • DurationGambling for 9 or more consecutive sweeps (approximately 3 hours) without a break.
  • Financial DistressAttempting to borrow money, or multiple ATM/EFTPOS withdrawals in a single day to fund gambling.
  • Emotional IndicatorsVisible distress, anger, or frustration such as hitting machines or crying.
  • Compulsive BehaviourWaiting for the venue to open to play, refusing to leave at closing time, or neglecting dependents (e.g., leaving children unattended).

Our Intervention Procedure

When staff identify potential signs of harm, they are required to take appropriate, non-confrontational action:

  • 1
    "Is everything OK?"
Staff may use this approach to open a conversation if they have concerns.
  • 2
    Support and Assistance
Staff can provide information on problem gambling support services and explain the self-exclusion process.
  • 3
    Record Keeping
In accordance with regulations, all identified signs of harm and subsequent conversations are documented and reviewed weekly by the venue manager.

Player Tools and Support

We encourage our patrons to practise responsible play:

Set Limits

Decide how much time and money you are comfortable spending before you start.

Know the Odds

Gaming machines are for entertainment, not income. In New Zealand, machines return 78–92% to players, meaning a loss is expected over time.

Self-Exclusion

If you feel you are losing control, you can request a Self-Exclusion or Multi-Venue Exclusion (MVE) from our venues at any time.
